Appalachian Mountain Advocates had a big win yesterday when the Environmental Quality Board upheld new safety standards passed to prevent a repeat of the January 2014 Freedom Industries, a massive chemical spill that contaminated drinking water for thousands of people in Charleston and surrounding communities. The state Environmental Quality Board rejected the gas industry’s challenge to decisions by state regulators about which chemical storage tanks would be covered by new safety standards.
We intervened on behalf of West Virginia Rivers Coalition and the West Virginia Citizen Action Group in order to help protect the rules from the gas industry’s attacks. Natural gas lobbyists had previously tried to have their industry exempted entirely from the chemical tank legislation, but lawmakers declined to adopt that proposal.
