Appalmad is representing the school board of Boyd County, Kentucky, in a challenge to one of the largest landfills operating in the southeastern United States. Noxious odors from the Big Run Landfill have caused health problems across the community, and have been so bad that the district has evacuated children from its facilities. The majority of the waste in the landfill is shipped in from New York and New Jersey by rail.
“We don’t want to close the landfill, and we don’t want any money. We just want them to comply with regulations,” school board chair Bob Green said. Read more.
